I’m at the garage with the car, but I also have my laptop with me.
So, since I have to wait a little anyway, I thought I’d write a post for RetroDag about the books on theatre pedagogy that helped me, both as an actor and as an acting teacher.
Stanislavski helped me, but he also confused me. The books that helped me most were “Creating a Role” and “Analysis Through Action”, written by Maria Knebel but essentially the final part of Stanislavski’s system.
Other important books for me were “Improvisation for the Theater” by Viola Spolin and “Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre” by Keith Johnstone.
“Games for Actors and Non-Actors” by Augusto Boal, “The Actor and the Target” by Declan Donnellan, and “A Poetics of the Actor’s Art” by Ion Cojar also mattered.
I also recommend the documentary “Sanford Meisner: The American Theatre’s Best Kept Secret”, directed by Nick Doob and produced by Sydney Pollack. In fact, that is where I would start.
